Floating solar power plants are a promising renewable energy technology. Solar modules are installed on floating structures on appropriate water surfaces. This technology offers great potential for green energy production, especially in areas where the available land for large-scale photovoltaic power plants is scarce.

In countries with high population density and limited idle land, such as many Asian countries, floating solar mounting systems are more likely to expand the scale of installed capacity.

Following the first project in 2006, the installed capacity of floating solar power plants was only 10 MW by 2015, but it has since accelerated greatly, reaching 2GW by the end of 2020. It is estimated that the global potential total installed capacity of floating solar power plants deployed on inland waters alone may be as high as 4 TW, and the installed capacity is expected to exceed 10 GW by 2025.
